  One option is to have a secure USB stick with all your passwords on it with your keys. Have a look at some of the stuff they sell on Hushmail. You can always let your OS 'remember' but I always worry that if someone stole my laptop and got past the first level of security that I'd be completely compromised. One final way is to try and do your really secure stuff on sites (like HSBC corporate banking) that use an RSA fob. Oddly HSBC provide these free for business banking but not for normal accounts (when I asked they said it was 'new' technology).

  OpenID is the most promising way out of the password quagmire. And others (e.g., http://www.clickpass.com) are building on OpenID to provide a better user experience. I expect to see muh progress in this area over the next year.

  While many large Internet properties are announcing support for OpenID, I expect that they are aiming to make themselves OpenID Providers (OPs) well before they make themselves Relaying Parties (RPs) in an effort to maintain "control.". I hope the enlightened few will prove me wrong on this point.

  Recently discovered a service called PassPack (http://www.passpack.com/) which is a good solution for the problem of accessing passwords remotely. It uses AES encryption on the client via JavaScript so your pass key is never sent through the wire and means that even the site cannot decrypt your passwords (so if they are compromised your data is still safe). They provide a password generator to create strong, random passwords and have an auto-login facility so that you don't even have to type the passwords.
